News from the Millennium Mathematics Project

2012 is the centenary of Alan Turing's birth, and as part of our celebrations our NRICH project has a special focus this month on codes and ciphers, with engaging mathematical activities for Key Stages 1 right through to 5 (ages 5 to 18).

The Times has described our NRICH programme as 'the best free website' in a guide for parents about secondary maths education, published on Monday 23rd January 2012, compiled with the help of headteachers.

In the guide, The Times singles out NRICH as the focus of an article titled 'The best free website: how to use NRICH', saying 'One online resource is proving there are ways to offer extra maths that don't engender the groan factor.'

2012 is Turing year, celebrating 100 years since the great mathematician and code breaker's birth. Learn more about Turing's work with these articles from the Plus archive.

Our NRICH website has just published a new collection of online resources exploring the theme of population dynamics. Aimed at advanced students, the resource package explores the fascinating maths involved in creating mathematical models to describe the changes in populations of living creatures.

To help you celebrate the countdown to Christmas, we've created three online Advent calendars each hiding a marvellous array of mathematical goodies behind their doors!

The Plus Advent calendar presents an assortment of intriguing articles, podcasts and interviews from the archives of Plus, our online popular mathematics magazine. This is aimed at a general audience with an interest in maths.
